Pee Dee Rescue Squads Meet In Johnsonville
JOHNSONVILLE - Rescue Squads from throughout the Pee Dee showed up in Johnsonville Friday to help whip up enthusiasm for National Safety Week and show off the equipment they use to save lives.
Practically everybody in these parts showed up to watch the units parade through town in a salute to the highly-regarded Johnsonville Rescue Squad headed by Tom E. Redmond.
More than two dozen units took part in the late afternoon march through town. The parade was led by area law enforcement officer and local Mayor Wilson Hardee. Ambulances and other rescue vehicles following Hardee's car bore safety posters made by Mrs. De De West of Johnsonville High.
South Carolina Association of 'Rescue Squads (SCARS) Mrs. Harriett Mays, of Bethune, turned up for the parade. Participating units came from Hemingway, Pamplico, Kingstree, Georgetown County, Latta, Hartsville, Scranton, Marion, Mullins, Andrews, Lake City, North Myrtle Beach, and Johnsonville.

Twenty-seven turkeys were awarded last week as area residents turned out to try their luck and skill at the Benefit Turkey Shoot held at DeWitt's Bluff and sponsored by the Pamplico Fire and Rescue Squad.

Beginning at noon, target enthusiasts continued until 7:30 p.m. when lighting became necessary for the shoot to continue. A concession stand greatly added to the event's attraction.

An estimated $132 was cleared and Fire and Rescue Squad members plan to apply the profit to the purchase of rescue equipment for local use.
